Russia Wagner Group Suspected of Aiding Hezbollah During Israel Conflicts, US Asserts
The US reports that amidst tensions involving Israel, Russia's Wagner group is preparing to provide Hezbollah with weapons.
Russia Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary outfit, has declared its intention to upgrade its support for Hezbollah’s air defenses, which might lead to a ratcheting up of hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
Wagner intends to supply the Russian SA-22 Greyhound system to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization, according to two American authorities who spoke with the Wall Street Journal. Anti-aircraft cannons and surface-to-air missiles form the core of this system.
Iran-backed Israel has been conducting air and military operations against Hamas in the southern Gaza Strip, while the Lebanese organization Hezbollah has been fighting Israeli soldiers across the border in northern Lebanon.
Pantsir-S1, also known as the Greyhound anti-aircraft system, is a new weapon system Hezbollah hopes will strengthen its defenses against Israeli aircraft, cruise missiles, and other high-tech precision weaponry.
The Wall Street Journal said that Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, a spokesman for the Pentagon, had serious doubts about the veracity of the report.
It is yet unknown how the anti-aircraft system will be shipped. However, officials are keeping a close check on Wagner’s communications with Hezbollah since they view this as a major cause for concern.
In June, the Russia Wagner Group attempted a coup d’état against Russian President Vladimir Putin, although they were ultimately unsuccessful. The former leader of this state-funded private military organization, Yevgeny Prigozhin, perished in a plane crash.
Russian SA-22 Greyhound system?
The SA-22 Greyhound combines a command center, radar truck, and missile launcher into a single package designed to intercept and destroy a variety of airborne threats, including missiles, manned aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Since the development of this technology, worries about regional confrontations have grown, especially in the region along Israel’s northern border, where tensions with groups like Hezbollah remain unsolved. The ability of the nations or parties in possession of such a sophisticated system to defend their airspace might have a profound effect on the nature of modern warfare.
